Belgian region of Flanders wants 100.000 cars on alternative fuels on its roads by 2020

The Belgian region of Flanders wants 100.000 cars on alternative fuels on its roads by 2020, energy minister Annermarie Turtelboom of the Flemish regional government said in the Belgian business newspaper De Tijd. The region aims to have forty percent of these ‘green’ cars running on natural gas.
Belgium presently has one of the lowest number of cars on alternative fuels in Europe, mrs. Turtelboom noted, with only around 2.000 electrically powered cars and the same number of cars on natural gas. Most countries in Europe have an ‘action plan’ to increase the number of cars on alternative fuels, but Belgium clearly lacks one, the minister said. The Flemish regional government wants to bridge the gap by promoting both electrically powered cars and cars running on natural gas.
Mrs. Turtelboom stated the Flemish government had decided to favourite electrical cars, but that it had also identified natural gas as a fuel with clear environmental benefits, with 27 percent less CO2 emissions than cars with petrol engines and 95 percent less emissions of particulate matter than diesel engines. Natural gas is also up to 30 percent cheaper than diesel, mrs. Turtelboom said. The Flemish government will therefore support the expansion of the refuelling infrastructure with electrical outlets and filling stations for natural gas.http://www.ngvaeurope.eu/belgian-region-of-flanders-wants-100000-cars-on-alternative-fuels-on-its-roads-by-2020
